This is arguably the funniest Vickery comedy of his career! Be prepared to laugh till you burst! (Contains Mild Language)

What better way for Dougie and Lorna to celebrate 25 years of wedded (sort-of) bliss than to return to the Majorcan hotel where they honeymooned as excited newlyweds?
But it’s more heartbreak hotel than happy holidays for the couple, who find the rain in Spain isn’t the only thing to put a dampener on things. Dougie had been hoping to put the spark back in their flagging relationship but wasn’t expecting the fireworks that the holiday brings!

Frank is very excited to announce that the Arts Council of Wales are supporting the autumn 2010 tour of his brand new play – Barkin’.

It’s new. It’s funny. It’s poignant.
This autumn, Barkin’ will be presented by Grassroots Productions and Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres. It is a brand new black comedy written by and starring Frank Vickery, and directed by Phil Clark.

This tightly woven drama is a rich cocktail of pathos and humour, dark secrets and unrealised dreams.

Stevie has lived all her life with her domineering mother and feels trapped by the responsibility of caring for her, while her seemingly carefree brother is living life to the full. Now, has the day finally arrived when Stevie can, at last, experience the freedom she has yearned for? Or will she discover that things are not quite what they appear to be?

Barkin’, Frank’s first new play in over three years is an incisive, engaging, and darkly comic drama. Using his usual humour and realism, this black comedy explores issues that many of us can certainly identify with.

May contain strong language (suggested age from 14+)

Loose Ends Synopsis

Sun, Sea and Scheming in Frank’s Scorching Comedy

Following the massive success of Frank Vickery’s hilarious comedy Tonto Evans, Frank is once more back on stage – in the bawdy sea- side comedy Loose Ends.

The story centres on Marlene – who is an interfering and conniving mother.. She has an almost unbearable influence on the lives of her children, Darren and Louise, who are forever finding themselves in the middle of situations their cunning mother has contrived, and she doesn’t stop there she also makes her husband Roy’s life a misery. Louise is married and now Marlene decides it’s time to pull out all the stops and get Darren hitched too. No matter what Roy thinks!

On a weekend break in a caravan in Porthcawl, Marlene sees her chance, Bev, who owns the caravan, would be the perfect match for Darren! As Marlene plots and schemes to match-make for one child – the other one arrives on the run from her husband – just as Marlene reveals the devastating reason for her over-protective and sometimes infuriating behaviour.

This bitter-sweet comedy is classic Frank Vickery fare – packed with hilarious one-liners and moments of pure slapstick.

‘I love playing Roy in this play ’, Frank comments, ‘He is hen-pecked and bossed round by Marlene and try as he might, he can’t get the last word – like most valley’s husbands really! This is definitely one of my funniest comedies.’

Frank Vickery started writing whilst still in school and had his first major success at the age of twenty-one when his first comedy ‘After I’m Gone’ won the Howard De Waldon Trophy for the best one act play in Great Britain.

Frank Vickery is now considered to be Wales’ most popular playwright. Also a talented actor, his writing and performances have achieved widespread critically acclaim and confirmed his place as a leading name on the Welsh touring circuit since the early 1990s.

Tickets for this hilarious comedy are available now from the tour venue Box

Ray ’Tonto’ Evans, ex-miner, country and western fanatic, given to dressing up as a Native American, feathered headdress and all, has come into money. He dreams of visiting the Wild West and eating beans by the campfire, but Mair, his long suffering wife of 30 years has other ideas.

They wrangle non-stop, while their son and his dozy wife prepare for a trip to Disneyland with their share of the windfall. But all their plans are put on hold by a murder inquiry conducted by the other son who happens to be the overly enthusiastic local plod. Where will it all end? And ’How’!?

This is one of Frank’s most ingenious comedies, packed with laugh out loud one-liners and moments of pure slapstick. It’s the rootin’ tootin’ cowboy comedy of the year

Don’t miss it….. you’ll die laughing!

Tonto Evans Review

Swansea Grand Theatre

Welsh playwright Frank Vickery has a gift for creating richly comic characters whose traits and foibles are instantly recognisable and observed with pinpoint accuracy.

This new comedy sees Vickery returning to the hugely satisfying sitcom-style brand of comedy which initially endeared him to legions of fans – and it looks set to become every bit as popular as its predecessors.

The story chronicles a day in the life of Tonto Evans (Vickery), an embittered character who is confined to bed in a grimy living room, surrounded by Wild West memorabilia and the trappings of chronic illness: pill bottles, a nebuliser, a commode and the ever-present can of apple-scented air freshener.

Tonto dreams of visiting America, but his shrewish wife Mair (Marilyn Hodge) has other ideas. The barbed exchanges between the characters are deliciously sharp and well crafted, and the laughs come thick and fast as the story unfolds.

Tonto’s sons John and Wayne, played by Richard Tunley and Lee Gilbert, become embroiled in the shenanigans, as does Lynfa Ackerman as Pat, an inquisitive neighbour with a natty line in soiled leggings and egg-stained T-shirts – but the biggest belly-laughs are reserved for Lorraine John’s glorious portrayal of daughter-in-law Wendy, who seems to live her entire life in slow motion.

This is undoubtedly one of Frank Vickery’s finest comic offerings to date, and it is destined to become a classic of its kind. At a time when the theatrical scene in and around South Wales is positively thriving, this is exactly the kind of production guaranteed to get people through the doors – and long may it be so.
